The Universities’ Theatre Festival
Created and organized by the "Lever de Rideau"(Raising the Curtain) Association
www.leverderideau.free.fr
Act I: Birth of the Festival
It was born on 1st May 1997, following the initiative of Benoît Chauvin and a number of students who lacked a place where they could meet, exchange ideas and present their theatrical projects – Thus the Universities Theatre Festival was launched.
Act II: The actors of a success
The members of the “Lever de Rideau” Association, voluntary helpers, support from Cabourg Town and the regional council as well as the resort’s own principal actors (the Partouche Group, le Grand Hôtel, the local businessmen etc.) EVERYONE contributed to the growing success of this festival which has now become something that simply cannot be missed!!!
Acte III : A panel of judges and several companies
Five to Seven companies from France’s (and even Europe’s) most prestigious universities (Caen, Lyon, Nanterre, Rouen, Sorbonne, Lithuania…) and the ’Grandes Ecoles’ of Centrale, ESSEC, HEC, Polytechnique…(the French equivalent of Oxbridge or the Ivy League) all participate and put on shows for the pleasure of around 2000 spectators!
The much coveted trophies are: ’The Grand Prix Lever de Rideau’, The Town of Cabourg Award, and finally the ’The Judges’ Favourite Award’ awarded by a panel consisting of amateurs and professionals all united by their passion for theatre.
Every year an important figure from the world of theatre presides over the panel of judges: Claudine Coster, Corinne Le Poulain, Bernard Menez, Michel Le Royer, Nicole Courcel, Jean-Claude Drouot, Geneviève Fontanel, Anne Alvaro, Pierre Santini, Claude Pinoteau etc.
The boards of Cabourg have become a place for the interpretation of the great classics, illustrious contemporary authors and also new works by the students of these Universities.
This is a festival which is not to be missed!
